Swine Flu

This past week has been a little different than planned. Instead of having cell groups, club, and church, we're doing extra projects. We're washing our hands more, reading the news, and not going out as much. Even though there are as of yet no documented swine flu cases here in Fresnillo, it probably won't stay that way for long, and we're trying to be careful.

Many, many things in Mexico have been shut down. There's no school for a week and a half, all non-essential government offices are temporarily closed, and in Mexico City, many public places such as restaurants, movie theatres, bars, and stores have been shut down. Public events are postponed or canceled. A lot of people walk around with blue or white masks on.

This swine flu scare comes in the midst of the war between the Mexican army and the various drug cartels that operate here in the country. In fact, today, which is the Day of the Child and a special day at schools, many feared that the drug gang would take advantage of the special activities to make a violent statement. It has been an odd blessing that schools are closed and most families are staying at home.

Additionally, there was an earthquake measuring 5.6 that hit a little south of Mexico City a couple of days ago. Though no serious damage was done, I think the combination of all these stresses are making life a little difficult for Mexico these days.
